Course Descriptions:

Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for ELA, Math and Science

GPS for Language Arts: Fourth grade students will receive instruction in reading, writing, and listening, speaking, and viewing. By the end of 4th Grade, students will be able to:

Ø  Read and comprehend texts from a variety of genres

Ø  Understand and learn from texts without having a teacher preview the material for them

Ø  Read and understand informational texts from other content areas as well as from language arts

Ø  Use, independently, a variety of metacognitive strategies, such as self-questioning techniques when reading materials seem contradictory or hard to understand, to deepen and expand their understanding of texts

Ø  Use writing as a tool for learning

Ø  Articulate how authors use a variety of techniques and craft in their writing, and show evidence of the author’s craft in their own writing

Ø  Communicate effectively with different audiences

Ø  Participate in cooperative learning environments

 

GPS for Mathematics: All students will be actively engaged in developing mathematical understandings in real and relevant contexts. By the end of 4th Grade, students will be able to:

Ø  Use properties of the four arithmetic operations to solve and check problems

Ø  Determine when and how to use rounding

Ø  Solve problems involving multiplication and division of whole numbers (2-3 digits by 1-2 digits)

Ø  Add and subtract simple decimals and common fractions with common denominators

Ø  Measure weight and use appropriate units and tools to measure angles

Ø  Understand characteristics of and model geometric plane and solid figures, and use the first quadrant of the coordinate system

Ø  Understand and apply patterns and rules to describe relationships and solve problems, including using the strategy of working backwards

Ø  Write mathematical expressions using symbols and evaluate using different values

Ø  Gather, organize, and display data in bar, line, and picture graphs, and compare features of graphs and identify missing or duplicate data

GPS for Science: Fourth grade students will gather and interpret data and make models to focus on “doing” science related to earth science, physical science, and life science. KidSmart students are taught science through the use of Critical Experiences which are direct experiences that children should have when studying a specific content area. By the end of 4th Grade, students will be able to:

Ø  Differentiate between observations and ideas

Ø  Use records, tables, or graphs to identify patterns of change

Ø  Write instructions and make sketches that allow others to carry out a scientific procedure

Ø Compare and contrast attributes of stars and planets

Ø  Model position and motion of the earth, moon, and sun

Ø  Investigate beating and cooling and use of thermometers and insulation

Ø  Investigate magnets

Ø  Differentiate between habitants in Georgia and the organisms that live in our state

Ø  Recognize effects of pollution and humans on the environments

 

GPS for Social Studies: Fourth grade students will begin the formal study of United States history, from the development of Native American cultures to the year 1860. Concepts in geography, government, and economics will interface with the study of history. By the end of 4th grade, students will be able to:

Ø  Explain the development of early Native American cultures in North America

Ø  Describe the European exploration of North America and explain the factors that shaped British colonial America, as well as the causes, events, and results of the American Revolution

Ø  Analyze the challenges faced in governing the new American nation, westward expansion, and the abolitionist and suffrage movements

Ø  Locate the important geographical features of the United States, both natural and man-made, and describe how these physical systems affect the growth of the U. S.

Ø  Describe and explain the significance of selected historical documents and of governmental functions as they relate to democratic beliefs and freedoms

Ø  Use economic concepts of trade, opportunity cost, specialization, voluntary exchange, productivity, and price incentives to illustrate historical events.

 

National Standards for Physical Education and Health

 

Physical Education: The goal of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. The curriculum for physical education includes six national standards:

Ø  Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Ø  Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Ø  Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.

Ø  Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Ø  Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Ø  Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

 

Health Education provides students with the opportunity to learn about a variety of topics related to their physical, emotional, and social health. The curriculum for health includes eight national standards:

Ø  Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

Ø  Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors.

Ø  Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

Ø  Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Ø  Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

Ø  Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.

Ø  Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce risks.

Ø  Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health.
